Empire Cat: Parts Order Notification Project

Empire Caterpillar is a premier dealer of high-end Caterpillar mining and construction equipment. On any given day there are hundreds of parts orders being placed with one of Empire's 130 depots and stores which all run on AS/400 green screen systems. Empire's customers demanded a way to have modern "Amazon-style" visibility and notifications about the status of their orders since having a Caterpillar machine down in the field may represent a loss of thousands of dollars per day.

Polyrific built for Empire an application stack using Microsoft .NET technologies that used a data warehouse (MS SQL) that consumed data from AS/400 and then a middleware and API to run business rules for monitoring order status, calculating estimated delivery time based on rules built in a custom admin interface, and finally a rich front-end that surfaced HTML emails and landing pages to not only allow Empire's customers to view the status of the order on their mobile phones, but also see maps to the pickup location, get directions, and call the store directly from the page.

To sweeten the pot we worked with Empire's marketing department to let them manage, through a custom admin interface, location-specific ads that are displayed to the customers who receive parts order notification. This allows them to advertise specific events and inventory for a particular store or area.
